Singer Zinovy Shulman

Prominent Jewish singer Zinovy Shulman(1904 -1977) was born in Odessa(Ukraine). His father was a very famous chief cantor of the synagogue in Odessa Boruch-Leib Schulman. From his father Zinovy inherited beautiful voice (lyric-dramatic tenor). After graduating from high school, he studied singing at V. Selyavina (artist Odessa Opera House), and then from J. Gorin (in Moscow). In March 1925 he gave his first solo concert in Odessa,including the program of Jewish songs and romances. In 1934-1935 Zinnovy is a soloist of the Moscow Opera Studio-Theatre of Stanislavsky. In 1948, his concert in Moscow attended by Golda Meir, Israel's ambassador to the USSR. In 1949, in Kislovodsk, after the show he was arrested. In a closed trial in Kiev on charges of Jewish nationalism was sentenced to ten years in prison. Rehabilitated in 1956. Zinovy Shulman died in Moscow in 1977. And exactly 20 years in Israel, where his daughter now lives outstanding singer, he was posthumously awarded the title of "Asher Zion" (Prisoner of Zion)
